Uncertainty

It happened, I have been given my layoff notice at work.

I knew when I was promoted back in June that because of my new role, I would only be laid off if the entire building closed and well, that has happened.

Our entire operation is being closed. Almost 1400 people put of work from my city, as well as Montreal and Toronto. I feel for all my coworkers and their families, but for me, personally, I am taking this as a positive change.

I have learned a lot in my time there and have met many amazing people. I am optimistic and excited about what the future holds for me! I am going to remain employed until June, unless things change, and that gives me plenty of time to get things in order and move onto the next chapter of my life.

The only thing that bothers me is how my company is handling this "transition" as they call it. Our jobs are done and this location is closing but where are the jobs going? The Philippines and Bulgaria. We are only being kept on long enough to help them take over our tasks and train them. And some people weren't so lucky, they were walked out immediately after the announcement yesterday!

But, I will take what I have learned from there, my knowledge and experiences, and carry it onwards. The next few months will be challenging and it is a very hostile environment at work right now, but personally, I am just going to continue doing my job the best I can and think about the future in a few months. I have to look at this as a good thing, and you know what they say, when one door closes another one opens!

(By the way, you can probably guess from this post just who the company is that I work for, but I am not going to name any name's here.)

    1. Definitely agree!
I have to believe that there is something even better waiting for me once this chapter is over!

  3. you are a bigger person then me if you can remain upbeat and train new people. I am not sure I could do that, More power to you. I am glad you are remaining so upbeat but this news is yet another disturbing announcement of our jobs being outsourced and as a result this company will never receive another penny from me nor anyone else I can influence.

    1. It's definitely not easy, and I'm sure by June I might have a different attitude and want to pull my hair out, but, I still have a job to do until June and if it means I have to assist train, I will have to. But, I do agree that outsourcing is a major problem and this is just devastating to our community. It is a lot of people to have unemployed in a small city, where jobs are already hard to come by!

I can honestly say that once my time is up, I won't be supporting them either. I don't agree with management and I don't agree with the ways things have been handled, and will definitely take my personal business elsewhere from now on too!

  4. It's so exciting that you will start a new chapter in your life! It stinks now, but it will all fall into place. And I couldn't figure out the company, lol, I must be a bit dense. :)

    1. It is exciting, it's a new challenge which I can't wait for!
I will miss my job, I finally found something that I enjoy doing, straight day shift, no weekends.. haha, but something even better may just come along.

It's a pretty hot topic in Canada right now with this company -- big (or used to be!) retailer that has been around for decades. :)

    1. Definitely a positive, and it helps that I have my husbands support. After just buying a house, I wasn't expecting the response I got when I called him with the news, he just said to me, 'You know what, just enjoy your summer then and I will work overtime to get us by. You will find something else, you're smart." Which made things 1000 times better!

I'm sorry your work situation has been terrible. I've been in my fair share of awful work environments where I just dreaded going to work everyday, was so stressed out and could barely stand it - so I know what you mean! Hope things get better for you!

    1. It is an awful situation for the company, and I don't think they will make out too well with this announcement, but for me personally, definitely a positive, exciting and unexpected change! And thank you! :)

  7. What an amazing attitude to have about this! Taking the high road, I love it! I am sorry to hear about your layoff, but I have no doubt you will find something amazing when the time comes! It makes me so sad to hear about all the companies that are sending their work over seas. A large bank in my city is laying off 600 people over the next few weeks for the same reason.

    1. Thank you! :)
It is extremely sad to think about, and I feel so terrible for all my coworkers, some where both spouse's work at the company, and some that have been there for 20+ years. It's also a terrible blow for our small city. I have no doubts that it will be difficult to find another job that fit me so well, but I believe it will happen! Have to think positively when sudden changes come around!
