My Thoughts on Fashion Bloggers

Friday, November 22, 2013

I generally don't follow or read a ton of fashion blog - you know, the ones who only post outfit posts daily. It's nothing personal, I just prefer lifestyle type blogs where I can feel like I am connecting more to the person behind the blogger. Plus, I like to read and generally, an outfit post is all visual.

So, last night I was scanning through a few fashion bloggers that I do follow and I started thinking about the reasons why I don't follow more fashion blogs, and why I could never have one myself.

I love fashion. I like looking at it, to a point. But, if I had to choose fashion or comfort - I would choose comfort hands down.

Reasons Why I Will Never Be a Fashion Blogger:

  • I just don't have the style. Seriously, as much as I love fashion - I just don't have it. Unless I am going out or working, you can probably make a safe bed that I will lounging around our home in an oversized sweater and comfy pants. I can't get home and into my comfortable clothes fast enough some days! And honestly, I have not answered the door bell before because I'm not "dressed" or my hair isn't brushed. That's just how I am.
  • I can't imagine taking self portraits every day - for 30 mins to an hour. I just have zero interest or time for that. I respect those fashion bloggers that do, because I can only imagine how much they have to do to post 1 outfit post. Personally, I would much rather sit down - laptop in hand and type out a thought provoking or lifestyle post.
  • Jealousy and Money. Do you know how long it took for me to learn what the words c/o meant next to something? Now everytime I see it on something that is awesome and I would love to have, jealousy rears its ugly head. It's sad, but true. I could never, ever justify spending $300 on a sweater and to start out as a fashion blogger, I can only assume how much money you would need to spend to spruce up your wardrobe on a regular basis!
  • I've never shopped at the 'cool' places. I've never shopped at Nordstrom, J.Crew, Bloomingdales, etc. etc. I tend to stick to less expensive places as I just can't justify spending that kind of money! I'm an avid shopper of Forever 21, Aeropostale (best comfy clothes!), Old Navy, Le Chateau and I just recently made my first ever purchase of 2 sweaters at Macy's - so I've expanded a little bit there.
  • I don't like or wear high heels. I've worn high heels twice in my entire life -- at my wedding and at my middle school graduation. It all goes back to my love of comfort!

But, in all seriousness - to all the fashion bloggers out there, you have no idea how much I admire you. While I may not be the type of reader you are looking for that will stick around - I love your ability to always look polished, match perfect outfits and have professional looking makeup. In a way, I wish I could do it, but I know it is just not who I am - and I'm okay with that.

  1. I agree with a lot of this. since I work full time, i'm in work clothes most of the week, then sweatpants after work unless I have plans. so I really only 'dress up' maybe once or twice over the weekend. so even though I like cute clothes, it's hard for me to justify buying non-work clothes. I really do admire the work that goes into fashion blogging, but I would just be horrible at it haha.

    1. I totally agree with that, too. I'm either dressed for work or in track pants and t-shirt within 5 minutes of getting home - and I don't think people would be interested in seeing an outfit post where I am dressed like that, haha. But yes, I do admire fashion bloggers - all the work that goes into it and if they are receiving stuff for free, I'm jealous and they must be doing something right!

  2. I could not agree more with this whole post! I couldn't imagine : heels everyday( I am way to clumsy), I can't imagine buying anything super expensive yet in-style (I love the clearance racks) and I LOVE Comfy clothes.

    1. I know! I look at some outfit posts where the total cost for me to buy it just unreal - over $400 for a sweater, $300 for a pair of heels, etc .. It is just unrealistic so I lose interest. I admire these bloggers, but have no interest in following them.

  3. haha I definitely could be considered partly a fashion blogger, yet I have never set food in nordstrom j. crew, or bloomingdales. And I definitely don't get stuff for free :( And I think out of the 20+ outfits I've posted, one has included heels.

    I think I'm doing it wrong....Lol!

    1. See, I love finding a fashion blogger that posts outfit posts that are affordable AND cute! Those are the type of outfit posts I like. But, if someone continually posts outfit posts of items they received for free and the total outfit costs like, $1000, I lose interest because it's just not reality for me! You are definitely the type of fashion blogger that I love.

  4. I could never do fashion blogger either. I just don't have all that cute stuff, and I'd be so bored during photo shoots!

    1. I know! I always feel so awkward taking a picture of myself, I'm sure they all started out feeling that way and got used to it, but it is definitely not who I am and would get tiring fast!

  5. I couldn't agree with you more. Just the thought of having to do that day in and day out makes me throw up in my mouth a little. I think you said this all real well :)

    1. Haha, thank you! I wish I had the passion and drive to do it, but it's definitely not me -- and people wouldn't be interest in my vast collection of track pants and t-shirts, I just know it!

  6. I'm a fashion blogger and it's not as "bad" as you have portrayed it for all bloggers. While I also write about personal development and beauty, the Outfit posts are the easiest and fastest for me to do. You do not have to wear heels and you do not have to spend that much money either and I do not shop at any of the expensive places you mentioned. Except Macy's.

    1. I LOVE fashion bloggers that post a variety, like you do. It is just the ones that are strictly only fashion or outfit posts - I just can't find interest in that, personally, because I can't feel like I can truly connect to the person behind the blogger. Now, fashion bloggers that only post outfit posts aren't 'bad' - they just aren't for me and it was more of a general opinion on some of the blogs I have followed in the past. If I find a fashion blogger who posts cute outfit posts that are actually affordable - I love them all the more!

  7. What a fun blog you have! I'm obviously an insta-fan because I'm also your newest follower :) I used to be really into fashion blogs because I just couldn't get over the stunning photography, the gorgeous clothes (and "models"), and the creativity behind it all. However, I like you found that jealousy really started to rear its ugly head at me---I found myself more and more discontent with my own wardrobe, and I kept finding reasons why I just "had" to buy more things. Now I'm trying to find more minimalism blogs, which are having the opposite effect on me. It's scary how much we are what we read, eh?

  8. I've always preferred the variety bloggers and the real-life fashion bloggers! I do outfit posts once a week, my husband spends maybe about 5 minutes snapping 2-3 pictures of me in our own yard, I wear clothes I've had since high school--to me, real fashion is pretty interesting because of the stories involved in different outfits. But plain old "real" fashion? Yeah, I"m not interested in that, either!
