My Boudoir Photoshoot + 5 Reasons Why Everyone Should Try It!

Thursday, September 19, 2013

I had quickly mentioned back at the beginning of July that I could cross one more item off my bucket list -- I had a boudoir shoot done! Would I ever do it again? ABSOLUTELY!

It was a truly awesome experience that started off with getting pampered at a salon, having my hair and makeup done. Then off I went to the middle of nowhere to stand half naked in a field in front of 2 people. Was I nervous? Heck yeah! I chose a very high end professional photographer for this shoot for this very reason. I didn't want to be half naked in front of just anyone. It needed to be someone who knew what they were doing, and had a lot of experience behind them. Someone who could make me feel more at ease. And it definitely helped.

I didn't do any nudity, just tasteful lingerie shots for my husband. But, I'm also happy that she provided me with some less revealing and face shots that I'm able to share with you all!

If you've ever thought about trying it, here are 5 more reasons to give you that push:

#1. It will allow you to gain confidence and feel empowered. I never thought I would actually go through with it, and almost chickened out several times on the way over there. Because sexy is not something I see in myself, most days not even beautiful. But every woman is beautiful and should be celebrated. You do not need to do anything you are uncomfortable with, you can even do glamour shots if you aren't totally up for boudoir -- anything to celebrate who you are and make your inner confidence shine through.

#2. It's fun! A day of pampering, hair and makeup, and taking photos like a supermodel? You might be nervous to start, but those nerves will subside and you will truly enjoy it. I know that it's not something for everyone, but for anyone even considering it, it will be fun!

#3. It makes a great gift. For your husband, your significant other, or just for yourself! I really regret not doing this years ago just for myself, but I'm happy I did now to give to my husband as a gift. He loved it as an anniversary present.

#4. You will feel sexy. YOUR version of sexy. There are some stereotypes around boudoir photography being raunchy, over the top and trashy even - this is not the case. True professional boudoir photography is sexy, classy, and glamorous. If over the top, sexy is your style? That's fine too. Your photographer will not make you do anything you are not comfortable with, and if they are truly professional, they will help make you feel at ease, sexy and natural.

#5. Cross it off the bucket list! If having a boudoir shoot is on your bucket list (it was on mine and has been for years) then you can check it off as an amazing accomplishment. It truly is a once in a lifetime experience for most women, unless you want to do it again of course.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
I have always been curious about it. I have an amazing photographer friend who just started shooting boudoir and I am interested, but I don't know if I will have the confidence to carry it out!

    1. I don't know whether a friend would have made me more or less comfortable, but that is awesome that you know someone personally who would do it! I didn't think I had the confidence either, and really surprised myself by actually going through with it (and I had about 2 months to go back and forth after sending my deposit over for the photoshoot, haha!)

  2. I'd love to do boudoir shoots, as a model AND as a photographer. I think I'd have a blast with it. Shame I don't know how to market myself locally/find people I'd be comfortable with.

    1. It can definitely be hard, I was super lucky that a very well known wedding photographer in our small area switched to mainly portrait and boudoir photography a few years ago. She was already established as a wedding photographer, so I knew she was the real thing and 100% professional, which truly helped!

And you would definitely have a blast!

    1. Haha, that way of thinking crossed my mind too! I even caught myself thinking, 'Oh gosh, why didn't I do this when I was 20 and in much better shape!' but it's more about bringing out each woman's true beauty, which why I really love the idea behind it!

You should definitely do it! I still can't believe I did, but I'm sooo happy with results and the experience.

  4. “I chose a very high-end professional photographer for this shoot for this very reason. I didn't want to be half naked in front of just anyone.” - That's right, Tara! Boudoir is more complicated than other types of photography; it's art and sensuality combined. Thus, you need someone highly-experienced, who you can fully trust to capture your half-naked photos with professionalism. Barrie @ ArtOfSeductionChicago.com

  5. Your eyes in that first pic are stunning! I've thought a couple of times about getting these types of photos taken for my hubby, but I'm totally chicken! I love your five reasons, especially 1 and 4! xo
